This is important to remember, though remembering it is easier from a distance. They don’t hunt us as the robin would. They do not calculate like cats, or arrive without warning like children. Dogs are blunt creatures. They are built almost entirely of nose, appetite, opinion, and feet.

There are two of them.

The round one breathes like a bellows and believes every object in the garden requires investigation with his face. He has a broad head, damp eyes, and the confidence of a creature who has never once wondered whether he fits through a space before entering it. The small sharp one moves faster than thought and is offended by nearly everything. He barks at leaves, shadows, buckets, gulls, the wall, the back door, his own reflection in the dark glass, and once for nearly half an hour at a courgette.

Bracken says the small one has the soul of a tax collector. Rue says tax collectors have more restraint.

Before the dogs, all routes change. Foragers cross the patio then if they must cross it at all. Menders leave finished work in the rosemary notch. Stores sends anyone young and fast to collect what the night runners have put beneath the bench. Children are meant to stay inside the wall, though children hear meant as a suggestion made by people whose knees have given up.

That morning, Moth and I were sorting the returned scraps from beneath the sill. The woman had been cutting paper again, small pale edges dropping near the cold frame where the round dog could not reach without moving a pot, which meant he absolutely would try. Moth had brought a basket. I had brought my outdoor bag because I had learned, recently and against my wishes, that leaving the wall with proper tools was not always an admission of defeat.

Sedge arrived with a length of grass rope over one shoulder.

“You’re late,” I said.

“I am here before the dogs.”

“That is not the same as on time.”

“It is the only time that matters.”

He crouched beside the rosemary and began lifting the paper scraps one by one. He did not take the marked pieces. None of us did now. If a scrap carried the woman’s writing, even one torn word, it went into the return pile or stayed where it was. Blank edges were different. Blank edges were useful. I sorted them by thickness while Moth checked for grease, damp, and boot prints from the large man, whose shoes carried small stones in the ridges and ruined delicate paper.

<picture></picture>

Above us, the woman moved in the room.

We heard the cup first, then the soft scrape of the chair. He had gone still, head tilted.

The woman spoke inside. Not loudly. We could not hear the words, only the tone, the way large ones speak when their hands are full and they expect smaller lives to understand them anyway. The round dog answered by hitting the door with what sounded like his whole body.

“Now,” I said.

We moved quickly. Moth gathered the basket. Sedge tied the grass rope around the loose bundle of thicker paper, and I checked beneath the sill for anything left behind. A strip of blue thread had caught on the brick. I reached for it just as the back door opened.

The garden filled with feet.

The round dog came first, snorting, delighted, without any plan except forward. He landed on the path so hard the paper bundle shifted in Sedge’s arms. The small sharp one shot past him, barking at the rosemary because the rosemary had the nerve to exist.

“Wall,” Sedge said.

“I know.”

Moth was already under the lower leaf with the basket pressed to her chest. I stepped back, but the blue thread remained hooked around the brick, one end trailing from my hand. A ridiculous thing to risk being flattened for. A perfectly good thing to be angry about losing.

Sedge saw it and put the paper bundle down.

“Don’t,” I said, though he was already moving.

The small sharp dog turned at the sound of the paper shifting. His ears lifted. His body followed. He came towards us at a run, all teeth and purpose, though the purpose was probably only to smell something until it regretted existing.

Sedge caught the loose end of thread and pulled.

It did not come free.

Of course it did not come free. It had twisted itself twice around the rough edge of the brick and tightened there. Sedge braced one foot against the soil and pulled again, harder this time, while the small sharp dog came through the rosemary with his ears lifted and his whole body arranged around the idea of discovery.

“Sedge,” I said.

“I have it.”

“You do not.”

The dog reached the first stems. His nose pushed through, black and wet and far too close, and his breath moved the loose paper at Sedge’s knee. Sedge leaned back, still holding the thread, but the paper bundle shifted under his elbow and the blue strand drew tight between his hand and mine.

For one ridiculous second, all I could think was that it was good thread.

Then the dog sneezed.

I cut it.

Sedge fell backwards with the freed piece in his hand as the small dog shoved his face fully into the rosemary and shook loose a dead lavender head. I caught Sedge by the sleeve and pulled him towards the wall gap just as the round dog arrived and put his entire head into the place where we had been.

We made it inside with the basket, half the paper bundle, and a piece of blue thread too short to justify the trouble.

No one spoke for several breaths.

Outside, the dogs investigated the rosemary, the sill, the brick, each other, and then a patch of soil that had offended neither of them. The woman stood in the doorway above them with one hand on the frame. I could see only her feet and the hem of what she wore, but I knew she was watching them the way large ones watch dogs, with love and exhaustion mixed so thoroughly there is no separating one from the other.

Sedge still had the thread in his hand.

I took it from him.

“That was stupid,” I said.

“Yes.”

“You could have dropped it.”

“Yes.”

“It is too short for anything useful.”

He looked at the thread. “Not anything.”

Moth, who had recovered enough to become unbearable, adjusted the basket against her hip. “It could mend a glove finger.”

I turned on her.

She smiled.

Sedge held out his hand for the thread again, but I put it in my pocket.

“No,” I said.

He looked at the pocket, then at me. “No?”

“I cut it. It is mine.”

The small dog barked outside, sharp and furious, as though he had just remembered the courgette.

Sedge looked towards the sound. “You only have it because I pulled it loose.”

“And you only pulled it loose because I was holding it.”

Moth walked past us into the wall passage. “I will record this as a joint idiocy.”

“Do not record it at all,” I said.

“That seems unlikely.”

By the time the dogs were called back inside, the paper scraps had scattered under the bench, and the round one had left a wet mark on the lower rosemary. The woman came out after them with a cup in one hand and no shoes on her feet. She bent, gathered three pieces of blank paper from the path, and set them on the sill beside the lavender buds.

Then she went back inside.

<picture></picture>

Moth looked at the paper.

Sedge looked at me.

I looked at the small piece of blue thread in my hand and thought of glove fingers, and shallow drawers, and all the useless things people keep because they have become difficult to throw away.

“After the dogs,” embarrassed. He laid it across my table beside two buckles waiting to be sorted, but kept one hand on the end as though I might refuse to touch it.

“No,” I said.

“You haven’t looked.”

“I have looked at three of these in eleven days.”

“This one isn’t mine.”

“That makes it worse.”

He drew the strap slightly towards himself. A thick smear of reddish dirt marked one edge, and several fibres had been pulled loose from the same side. It had not snapped beneath a load. Something had caught the weave and dragged against it. I reached for the strap before remembering I was refusing to help, which Sedge noticed but, wisely, did not mention.

“How much was he carrying?”

“She.”

“How much was she carrying?”

“Nothing unreasonable.”

I looked up from the strap and waited. Sedge sighed.

“A hazelnut and six oat pieces.”

“Six?”

“They were small.”

“You all say that.”

“Because menders have a distorted sense of size.”

“Menders understand that objects become heavier when you put more objects on top of them.”

“That has never been proved.”

I pointed towards the passage. Sedge remained on the low stool, hands resting on his knees, as comfortable now in my workroom as a person could reasonably become without being invited. Since the nettle thread he had stopped hovering near the doorway and asking whether I was busy when I was clearly holding a needle. He knew where I kept the water cup, though he still asked before taking it, and he had never once opened the shallow drawer.

Unfortunately, he had also learned that I did not always mean go away when I said it.

“This isn’t a load tear,” he said.

“I know.”

His eyebrows lifted, and I regretted answering so quickly.

“You know?”

“The fibres have been pulled from the side. There is plant matter caught in them, and the dirt is red.”

“There is red dirt on the outer route.”

“Then I have narrowed it down.”

“To half the outer route.”

“That is still narrower than it was when you came in.”

Sedge stretched his legs beneath the table. The repaired boot was holding well. I had used a double stitch along the inner heel and sealed the edge with wax, and though he had already scratched the toe, the sole no longer scraped along the stone. I had grown used to hearing him at the first turn beyond the mint roots. Now he could arrive without warning and stand in my doorway carrying broken things.

I bent over the damaged strap and separated the loose fibres with the tip of my needle. “You blame the loads every time,” Sedge said.

“Every time one of you brings me a broken strap, I ask what you were carrying and you begin lying.”

“We don’t lie. Nothing unreasonable is a professional term.”

“It means too much.”

“It means the amount was worth carrying.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“To a forager it is.”

I selected a thread close to the weight of the original weave and cut a length. Sedge stayed where he was. I could tell he had more to say by the way his thumb rubbed across one knee, but I refused to rescue him from his own complaint.

Finally he said, “You think we walk out, find something heavy and drag it home until the equipment gives up.”

“That is a fair account of the walnut.”

“The walnut was unusual.”

“You said mostly shelled.”

“It was an unusually good walnut.”

I set the first stitch and pulled it through. Sedge watched my hands for a moment, then looked towards the hooks when I caught him doing it.

“Come out with me,” he said.

The needle slipped close enough to my thumb that I stopped. “No.”

“You haven’t been beyond the stone edging in years.”

I looked at him.

Sedge’s face changed before I had to ask. There are mistakes people make because they do not know better and mistakes they recognise while the words are still leaving them. His was the second sort.

“Who told you that?”

“No one.”

“You just said it.”

“I guessed.”

“You don’t guess. You count walnut shells before deciding whether they still qualify as mostly shelled.”

“That is unrelated.”

I put the needle on the table. “Who?”

Sedge glanced towards the doorway, and that was enough.

“Moth.”

“She may have mentioned it.”

Of course she had. Moth treated private information much as Bracken treated pins. She rarely took it on purpose, but somehow it ended up in her hand.

“What else did she mention?”

“Nothing.”

“Did she tell you about Aster?”

“No.”

“The drawer?”

“No.”

“My hands?”

He paused, and I sat back.

“She said they ache sometimes.”

“She had no right.”

“I know.”

“You still listened.”

Sedge stood when I did, though I had not intended to stand until I found myself on my feet with one hand braced against the button table. “She told me because I asked why you were splitting large thread when fine work hurts your hands.”

The room seemed smaller with both of us upright. I looked at him, at the unfinished strap between us, at my own fingers gripping the table hard enough for the old scar beneath my thumb to whiten.

“You asked Moth about my hands?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

For once, Sedge did not have an answer ready. His mouth opened, then closed. I should have enjoyed that more than I did.

I let go of the table and sat down. “I don’t need you discussing me with Moth.”

“I know.”

“You seem to know a great many things after you’ve done them.”

“Yes.”

“That is not an admirable quality.”

“No.”

He was agreeing too easily and ruining the argument. I picked up the strap and tried to return to the damaged weave, but the thread had puckered where I had pulled it too tightly. I cut the stitch out.

“Go and forage.”

Sedge remained beside the stool. “Please come and look at the route.”

I started the stitch again and kept my eyes on the strap. “Why?”

“Because three straps have torn in the same place.”

My hand stopped.

This time he did not add anything.

I turned the strap over and looked again at the red dirt worked into the edge, the crushed green matter and the direction of the pulled fibres. His own bag had been different at the buckle, but I remembered dirt in the leather and the faint smell of walnut. Half a walnut had been absurd, and because it was absurd I had stopped looking for any other explanation.

“When?”

“Now.”

“I have work.”

“Rue said her shawl could wait until tomorrow.”

My eyes moved to the folded shawl on the shelf. “You’ve spoken to Rue as well?”

“I forage. I speak to everyone.”

“This is becoming a terrible morning.”

Sedge’s mouth moved, but he managed not to smile. I took the damaged strap from him when he bent to collect it and told him to leave it on the table. Then I fetched my outdoor bag from behind the apron hook.

I had not used it for a proper route in a long time, but the leather was sound because I am not an idiot. Inside were a cloth wrap, wax, small shears, three needles, two weights of thread, fastening pins and a folded piece of paper. Sedge watched me check each item.

“You carry a repair kit?”

I looked at him. “I am a mender.”

“We have straps on the route.”

“Apparently you don’t. You keep bringing them to me in pieces.”

He followed me out.

The wall passages were already busy. Stores had opened, and two children were rolling a dried pea between them until Rue came through and confiscated it on the grounds that food was not recreation. Bracken sat outside his rooms repairing a seed-case hinge with the wrong tool. He saw my outdoor bag, then Sedge behind me, and lowered the hinge.

“Where are you going?”

“Out.”

“Why?”

I kept walking. “Do you require everyone’s movements in advance?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Is Moth going?”

Behind me, Sedge asked why Moth would be going. Bracken said, “Exactly,” in the satisfied voice of a person who believes he has contributed something.

“Do not ask,” I told Sedge as we reached the mint roots.

“I wasn’t going to.”

“What did he mean?”

“Sedge.”

“All right.”

We climbed towards the opening beneath the rosemary. The first quiet hour was long gone. Bees moved through the lavender, and one of the large ones had left the garden door open. Somewhere inside the house a machine ran in short bursts. I could hear the woman moving in the room above us, but the window itself was empty.

Sedge stepped onto the lower stone and waited.

“I know the way out,” I said.

“I know.”

“Then why are you waiting?”

He looked down at me. “You have shorter legs.”

I looked at his legs. He looked at mine, then climbed before I could answer.

Beyond the rosemary, the garden opened wider than I remembered. Inside the wall, every turn has been worn into use. The passage narrows where the stone narrows; the roots tell you where to step; a dark corner usually belongs to someone, even if that someone has filled it with jars and stopped going there years ago.

Outside, there was simply more of everything.

The herb bed ran towards the stone edging, thick with thyme and lavender. Several cut flower heads lay on the soil where the large ones had dropped them earlier in the week, and one stem had fallen across the route. Sedge stepped over it without thinking. I went around.

He noticed.

“Don’t,” I said.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were about to.”

“I wasn’t.”

I adjusted the strap of my bag and walked ahead of him.

The outer route began at the stone edging. Sedge crouched and passed beneath a broad leaf through a narrow break in the soil. I had to lower my bag and push it ahead of me. Red dirt pressed into my palms. On the other side, Sedge turned and offered his hand.

I stood without it.

He wiped his palm on his trousers and said nothing.

The route was worse than I expected. The large ones had moved two terracotta pots and left deep scrapes through the soil. Someone had laid lengths of grass across the exposed sections, but several had shifted and one was already splitting under repeated use. Sedge pressed it back into place with his boot while I looked at the worn path.

“You maintain this?”

“We all do.”

“I thought routes were stores’ responsibility.”

“Stores thinks everything outside stores is someone else’s responsibility.”

“That sounds like Rue.”

“It is a direct quotation.”

He ducked beneath the edge of a broken plant label. I followed and felt my bag pull sharply against my shoulder.

“Stop.”

Sedge turned at once.

I backed up carefully. A narrow metal hook protruded from beneath the label, almost hidden by dried dirt. It had caught the outer seam of my bag. Green fibres clung to the point, and several pale strands from older straps had twisted around it.

Sedge crouched beside me. “There.”

“Yes.”

He reached for the hook, and I caught his wrist before he touched it.

“Don’t. It will spring back.”

“I was going to bend it.”

“I have repaired your work before.”

“That feels unnecessarily broad.”

I released his wrist and opened my bag. The hook was fixed too deeply to pull free and too thick for my shears, so I cut a strip from the edge of the paper and folded it around the metal twice. Wax held the first layer while I wound thread around the second.

Sedge watched me finish the knot. “How long will that hold?”

“Until one of you decides to drag an entire walnut tree through here.”

“We haven’t found one.”

I packed the wax away.

He was smiling.

“What?”

“You came out to blame the loads.”

“I came out to inspect the route.”

“You blamed my load eleven days ago.”

“You were carrying half a walnut.”

“Mostly shelled.”

I walked ahead before he could say anything else.

We found a second snag farther on, this one a broken edge of terracotta at shoulder height. From below it looked smooth. A loaded bag would brush it on the turn, and the same outer edge of the strap would catch each time. The damage matched the one on my table exactly.

I wrapped that edge as well, then repaired one of the grass crossings while Sedge cleared loose soil from the path with the flat of his knife. Neither of us spoke much. He showed me where the foragers left shared water and the shallow notch where they sheltered during dog hours. I recognised three repairs I had done without ever knowing where the objects were used.

A narrow leather loop held a route marker against the stone. I had mended it the winter before for a woman who told me it belonged to her son’s work bag.

“You never said what these things were for,” I told Sedge.

“You never asked.”

“People bring me repairs.”

“Yes.”

“They don’t explain their lives.”

“Would you like them to?”

“No.”

Sedge nodded. “There you are, then.”

By the time we reached the empty pots, my knees were dirty, and my hands smelled of wax. Sedge had not mentioned either, which was sensible of him.

The nettles grew between two terracotta pots where water from above reached the soil. They were young but thick at the base, with long clean stems. Several had already been cut. One lay along the ground with the outer skin stripped away and pale fibres separated into lengths.

I crouched beside it.

“You did this.”

Sedge stayed behind me. “Yes.”

“You said you found thread.”

“I found nettles.”

“You brought me thread.”

“Yes.”

I touched one of the fibres. It had been separated evenly, with no rough pull marks.

“You processed it.”

“It isn’t difficult.”

“It is if you hurry the drying.”

“I didn’t hurry.”

I knew that. I had known it the moment I took the first coil from his hand.

“How long?”

“A while.”

“Sedge.”

He looked towards the empty pots. “Three evenings.”

I sat back on my heels.

Rue had taken most of the nettles for stores. I knew what happened there. Fibres would be stripped in batches, dried quickly and twisted by whoever had time. The thread would be useful and uneven and perfectly adequate for sacks.

Sedge had kept some aside.

“You did three evenings of this?”

“Yes.”

“For a boot repair?”

He glanced at me. “The boot repair came later.”

There it was.

He looked back at the stems.

I stood and brushed the dirt from my knees, though there was far too much of it to make the gesture useful. “You could have told me.”

“You would have refused it.”

“I nearly did.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think you found it already made.”

“I said there were nettles beyond the pots.”

“You also said, ‘Now I have thread.’”

“I had thread.”

“You are irritating.”

“I know.”

I sat on the edge of a broken saucer and took my bag onto my knees. The hook had not torn the seam, but one stitch had been pulled tight. I opened the repair kit and selected ordinary fibre.

Sedge crouched beside his bag and took out a small coil of nettle thread. He put it on the saucer near my knee.

“For the bag.”

“I have thread.”

“That is coarse.”

“It will hold.”

“Yes.”

I looked at him. Sedge looked towards the pots.

I took the nettle.

The finer fibre passed through the original holes without widening them. I loosened the strained stitch, eased the seam back into place and added three small supports along the outer edge. Sedge remained quiet while I worked.

When I finished, I ran my thumb across the repair.

“Better,” he said.

“You cannot see the stitches from there.”

“No.”

“Then what is better?”

He looked at the bag. “The bag.”

I put the needle away before I said something unhelpful.

A dog began barking inside the house. Sedge tilted his head to listen and said we should go back before the garden door opened. We packed quickly and took the same route back.

At the narrow break beneath the broad leaf, Sedge went through first and held the leaf higher from the other side. This time there was enough room for me to pass without removing my bag. I noticed. I did not thank him.

He did not ask me to.

We slowed at the metal hook to check the paper wrapping, then again at the repaired terracotta edge. Both held. At the grass crossing, Sedge pressed one loose end deeper into the soil, and I made a note to bring fastening pins if I came out again.

If.

The window above the rosemary was occupied when we returned.

The woman sat beside her little sun with both hands around a cup. She was not making marks. From below I could see her looking through the glass towards the garden without appearing to look at anything in particular.

Sedge followed my gaze.

“Is that her?”

“You know it is.”

“I’ve never seen her this close.”

“You work outside.”

“I work near pots and beetles. I don’t usually stand under windows.”

The woman lifted one hand and touched something beside the glass. The lavender buds had faded almost to grey, small enough now that they might have been dirt on the sill. She moved them farther from the edge.

Sedge watched.

“She kept those?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

He looked at me.

I adjusted the strap of my bag. “Do not.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were about to.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You looked like you were.”

This time he did smile.

I left him beneath the rosemary and went back into the wall.

Moth was in my workroom.

She sat on the low stool with Rue’s shawl across her knees and a cup beside her foot. My needles had been rearranged. Again.

I put my bag on the table, and Moth’s eyes went first to the red dirt along the bottom, then to the new stitches in the outer seam. Bracken had never asked after anything he could not fry, borrow, or complain about, and the lentils had given him no recent cause for interest. I kept stitching the cradle strap in my hand while he looked over my shoulder at the shelves, then at the floor, then back towards the passage as though he had arrived by accident and might yet remember somewhere else he was meant to be.

“They’re lentils,” I said. “They remain small and round.”

“Good.”

“How are your seeds?”

“Also good.”

I tied off the cradle strap. “Take off your coat.”

“I’ve only just arrived.”

“Bracken.”

He managed one arm before the sack slipped free and landed on the floor between us. I sat at the table and unpicked both attempts while Bracken wandered around the room touching things. My workroom is inside the wall, three turns beyond the old mint roots, where the stone stays dry even when the large ones pour water over the beds. It is narrow, but I prefer it that way. People are less inclined to settle when there is nowhere comfortable to put their elbows.

The table is the old button, pale on one side and scratched dark on the other from years of needles, blades and buckles. Above it I keep thread according to weight, or I did until Moth decided my system lacked ambition. Dog hair hangs from a separate hook because it gets into everything. On the lower shelf are rolls of paper screen, leaf twists of wax, three good buckles, two poor ones and a jar of pins Bracken is forbidden to approach.

He approached the pins.

“Sit down.”

“I am looking.”

“You are touching.”

“I haven’t touched anything.”

“You are holding a pin.”

Bracken looked at his hand, mildly surprised, and returned the pin to the wrong jar.

By the time I had rebuilt the bottom of his sack, he had eaten the piece of toast I had been saving and moved the low stool twice. I handed him the repair and told him to stop filling the sack above the third seam. He said the third seam was an arbitrary limitation imposed by menders who did not understand storage. I said the third seam was where the sack became wider than his shoulders.

He left with the sack under one arm and my toast in his stomach.

Sedge arrived before I had swept the loose fibres from the table.

I knew him by sight. Everyone knew the outer-bed foragers, partly because we relied on them and partly because they spoke of distance as if they had personally invented it. Their routes ran beyond the rosemary and herb beds, over the stone edging and towards the line of large pots near the back wall. The large ones kept all sorts there: cracked saucers, old soil, bent labels, pieces of wood and pots they had apparently decided to save until the end of civilisation.

Sedge stood in my doorway with his foraging bag over one shoulder. He was taller than was useful inside the wall and thin enough that Rue had, more than once, suggested feeding him against his will. His hair was tied at the nape with grass fibre, and two knives hung from his belt.

“You only need one of those,” I said.

He glanced down at the knives. “Usually.”

Then, before he had even taken off the bag, he looked directly at the shallow drawer beneath my work ledge.

“What do you keep in there?”

“Things I don’t show people who ask what I keep in there.”

He nodded, apparently satisfied, and placed his bag on the button table.

The drawer is for good things. A little shell clasp Aster made before her hands became unreliable. Two needles thin enough for eye-work. A strip of pale paper without printing or grease. The blue thread from the large ones’ towel, split down into finer lengths and wound around a piece of twig. I do not hide the drawer, because hiding something is the quickest way to make Bracken interested in it. People simply know not to open it.

Sedge ran one finger over the damaged strap on his bag.

“It tore.”

“I can see that.”

“I thought you might.”

I pulled the bag towards me. The leather had split beside the buckle and stretched badly on the opposite side. Dirt had been worked into the grain, and one corner was damp with something that smelled faintly of walnut.

“How much were you carrying?”

“Nothing unreasonable.”

“How much?”

Sedge sat on the low stool while I waited.

“Half a walnut.”

“Shelled?”

“Mostly.”

I put the bag down. “What does mostly mean?”

“There was still a little shell.”

“How little?”

He held his hands apart. I looked at the space between them until he moved his hands closer.

“You could have made two journeys.”

“Why?”

He did not say this to be difficult. That was the trouble. He genuinely wanted to know why anyone, faced with half a walnut in one place and a store room in another, would willingly walk between them twice.

I began cutting away the damaged stitching.

Most people talk while I work. Rue gives instructions, even when the thing being repaired belongs to someone else. Bracken handles tools until I threaten him. Moth finds another task and sits beside me doing it, which I like more than I tell her, though I often spend the next morning discovering she has rearranged my shelves according to whatever system occupied her mind at the time.

Sedge sat still.

I worked one side of the strap free, cleaned the buckle with the corner of my cloth and selected a heavier thread than I would normally use. When I glanced up, he was watching my hands.

“You’ll lose an eye doing that.”

“I am across the table.”

“Needles travel.”

“Do they?”

“Mine might.”

His gaze shifted, but not far. It settled on the scar at the base of my right thumb.

“What?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

“You were looking.”

“Yes.”

“At what?”

“The scar.”

I curled my hand around the strap. “It is a scar.”

“I know.”

Aster gave it to me when I was young, teaching me shell work. She had only three fingers on her left hand and more confidence in the remaining seven than most people manage with ten. When I cut myself, she wrapped my thumb and made me finish the hinge before supper.

She died years later with half a potato on her plate and a complaint still in her mouth. After that, people brought their work to me.

<picture></picture>

Sedge was still looking at the strap, waiting without appearing to wait. I reinforced the undamaged side before handing the bag back.

He turned it over. “You did both.”

“Yes.”

“Only one was torn.”

“The other was trying.”

His thumb moved over the new stitches. Foragers always test work with their hands. They pull, twist, bend and press as if the mender may have hidden a personal weakness inside the seam.

“I brought fennel seed,” he said.

I looked at the leaf twist beside my thread hooks. “That was you?”

“Yes.”

“You could have said you left it.”

“I thought you would recognise fennel.”

“I recognise fennel. I did not recognise it as payment.”

“Did you use it?”

“That isn’t the point.”

“What is the point?”

I had one, certainly. I had possessed it only a moment earlier. I looked down at the buckle and found nothing there to help me.

Sedge put the bag over his shoulder.

“Take less next time,” I said.

“Fennel?”

“Walnut.”

He smiled then. Not broadly. Just enough that I looked towards the fennel seed and wished, briefly, that Moth had left it after all.

Nine days later he returned with a split cuff.

I mended it while he sat on the stool and told me the outer pots had been moved again. A large one had dragged two terracotta pots across the stones and left a clear strip behind them where beetles were already gathering. He said this as though reporting a minor change to a street. I asked whether the route was safe. He said it would be when they had worked out why one of the pots smelled of cat.

The following week it was a fastening from his smaller bag. Three days after that, a glove.

I noticed the glove immediately.

There was a neat opening at the forefinger and no wear anywhere around it.

“You cut this.”

Sedge looked offended enough to be unconvincing. “I did not.”

“You caught it on something deliberately.”

“That is quite a different accusation.”

“It is the accusation I am making.”

He sat down and rested his forearms on his knees. “Can you mend it?”

I could. Instead, I put the seam on the outside.

He came back the next morning.

“It catches.”

“I know.”

He laid the glove on the button table while I sorted thread.

“The seam is on the wrong side.”

“I know.”

“Did you do that deliberately?”

“No.”

Sedge waited.

I kept winding thread. He remained on the stool. I moved to the finer weights, then back to the heavies because I had already sorted the finer weights and both of us knew it.

After perhaps thirty breaths, I held out my hand.

“Give it here.”

He passed me the glove.

“Don’t smile.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were about to.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You looked like you were.”

“I can’t mend my face.”

“Somebody might.”

That was how Moth found us.

She came through the doorway with cradle cloth folded over both arms and stopped when she saw Sedge sitting opposite me.

“Oh,” she said.

I continued unpicking the deliberately exposed seam.

Moth set the cradle cloth beside my elbow. “Busy?”

“Sedge is collecting his glove.”

“I can see Sedge.”

Sedge lifted one hand. “Moth.”

“Sedge.”

I pulled the thread harder than necessary.

Moth looked around the room. She had been in it the afternoon before, so there was nothing new to inspect. This did not stop her. She moved two rolls of paper screen, checked the wax jar, and finally began arranging my needles.

“Leave those.”

“They’re out of order.”

“They are in my order.”

“You have three heavies mixed with the mids.”

“I know where they are.”

“You shouldn’t have to know. That’s what order is for.”

Sedge watched her move a needle from one jar to another.

“Moth.”

“Yes?”

“Go away.”

She looked at me, then at Sedge, then back at me. “Of course.”

She left the needles exactly where she had put them.

I finished the glove and made Sedge test it before leaving. He bent the finger twice, rubbed the seam against the edge of his bag and announced that it no longer caught.

“That is the general purpose of mending.”

“I thought it might be decorative.”

“Go to work.”

<picture></picture>

He did.

The next time his footsteps came along the passage, I heard them before I saw him.

Outer-bed foragers wear harder soles because of the stone edging, and their boots scrape where ours slide quietly. Sedge’s left heel caught. The sound came at the first turn beyond the mint, steady and familiar.

Scrape. Step. Scrape.

He appeared with a torn strap from someone else’s bag and left without sitting. Two days later I heard the same scrape while repairing Rue’s shawl. Sedge passed the doorway carrying a bundle of dry grass and lifted one hand when he saw me.

After that, I began hearing him everywhere.

Not everywhere, obviously. This is how people talk when they want ordinary things to sound important. I heard him where he was: along the wall, near the mint roots, sometimes beyond the rosemary when I took finished work out to its owners. Once near stores, arguing with Rue about walnut measurements.

His heel scraped.

I told him twice to let me repair it.

The first time, he said it had always done that. The second time, he said he liked knowing which boot was his.

“That is why we put our feet in them,” I said.

He looked down at his boots as though considering this.

Still, when I heard the scrape coming towards my workroom, I knew who it was. Sometimes the low stool had been pushed beneath the shelf to make room for baskets or work waiting to be collected. If I heard him at the first turn, I pulled it out.

This was practical.

A visitor needs somewhere to sit.

Moth never asked why the stool had become practical at particular times of day, which meant she had noticed.

One morning Sedge came earlier than usual. I had opened the workroom but not properly started the day. My hair was still loose, my apron was on the chair, and I stood in the doorway eating a piece of toast that had broken when I tried to cut it. I had one half in each hand.

Sedge reached the turn and stopped.

I stopped chewing.

His eyes travelled from one piece of toast to the other, then up to my hair.

“You have hair,” he said.

I closed the door.

There was silence outside. I ate the larger half of the toast and waited.

A knock came.

“Mender.”

I said nothing.

“I spoke badly.”

I ate again.

“I knew you had hair.”

Another bite.

“I had not seen it like that.”

I opened the door.

Sedge was exactly where I had left him.

“That was worse.”

“Yes,” he said.

At least he knew.

He was holding one hand behind his back.

“What have you broken?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why are you here?”

He brought his hand forward.

Thread lay across his palm.

I forgot about my hair.

It was ours. Not the coarse large thread I had spent the previous week splitting into thinner strands, but proper nettle fibre, stripped fine and twisted evenly. A full coil, wound around a sliver of clean wood. I could see from the first turn that it had been dried slowly. Whoever had made it knew enough not to pull the fibres too hard.

I put the toast down on the shelf.

“Where did you get that?”

“Beyond the empty pots.”

“There are no nettles beyond the empty pots.”

“There are now.”

“How many?”

“Enough.”

“That is a forager’s answer.”

“Yes.”

“You should have told stores.”

“I did.”

“Rue?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the coil again. “She wanted all of it.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I gave her most.”

Sedge held the thread towards me.

I did not take it.

“What needs repairing?”

“Nothing.”

“You said that already.”

“It remains true.”

“Then what is this?”

“Thread.”

“I can see that.”

His mouth moved at one corner.

I pointed at him. “Do not.”

He straightened his face.

The workroom was untidy behind me. My apron still lay across the chair. One half of the broken toast remained on the shelf, shedding crumbs beside a roll of paper screen. The blue large-thread hung from the first hook where I had left it the night before, already split into three thin lengths.

Sedge looked past me.

“You’re low,” he said.

“I’m not.”

“You’re splitting large thread.”

My hand went still.

He nodded towards the hook.

“That means nothing.”

“You used to keep the blue at the end.”

I turned to look at it, although I knew perfectly well where it hung.

“You have been looking at my thread?”

“Yes.”

The answer came so quickly I had nowhere to put my irritation.

I faced him again. “You should not inspect other people’s stores.”

“I didn’t inspect them.”

“You know where I keep blue thread.”

“Yes.”

“You know I’m splitting it.”

“Yes.”

“You noticed.”

Sedge said nothing.

The large dog struck something near the back step. There was a thud, followed by barking and the sound of one of the large ones calling a name. We both glanced towards the outer passage, waited to see whether the noise required anyone, then looked back at each other.

The nettle thread still lay across Sedge’s palm.

“I don’t need charity,” I said.

“I know.”

“I can trade for it.”

“I know.”

“What do you want?”

He looked down at his left boot.

I stared at him. “No.”

“The heel catches.”

“I have told you that for weeks.”

“Yes.”

“You said it had always done that.”

“Yes.”

“You refused to let me fix it.”

“I did.”

“And now you’ve brought me enough nettle thread for half the wall?”

“Rue has most of it.”

“That is not an answer.”

Sedge lifted his foot. The loose heel scraped against the stone.

“I would like my boot mended.”

I looked at him for a long moment, then at the thread.

It was better than anything on my hooks. Clean, strong and twisted by someone who had not hurried the drying. I took the coil from his hand and ran one strand over the pad of my thumb.

Sedge looked past me into the workroom.

The stool was already out.

I saw his eyes settle on it. He looked at me again, but he had enough sense not to smile.

“Boot,” I said.

He stepped inside and sat down. By the time he had worked the first knot loose, I had put the nettle thread in the shallow drawer with the shell clasp, the two good needles and the pale paper I had been saving for no particular reason.

I closed the drawer.

Sedge set his boot on my table.

The heel was worse than I expected.

I looked at him.

He looked at the ceiling.

“How long?”

“This morning.”

I pushed one finger beneath the split sole.

Sedge scratched his jaw.

“Possibly yesterday.”
<div They are wasteful and loud, but the principle is sound. Sleeping, though they insist on doing it in one great lump instead of sensibly throughout the day. Mending, when they remember to do it. Courting, which they have made far more complicated than necessary and yet somehow less interesting. We understand doors, even if we do not approve of them. We understand cupboards, though no creature needs that many. We understand baths in theory, if not the scale of the undertaking.

Crying took longer.

Rue was the first to call it face-water, and because Rue says most things with the confidence of someone who has already accused the whole world and found it guilty, the name stayed. It is not a perfect name. Moth says it is unkind. Bracken says all accurate language begins as an insult. I say that if anyone has a better name for water coming out of a person’s eyes while they sit very still beside a cold cup, they are welcome to present it at council and be ignored in the usual way.

The difficulty was not the wetness. We are not sheltered people. We live under leaves, inside walls, behind roots, beside drains, and in the old places large ones forget to clean because their knees hurt or their attention moves. Wetness is a fact. It fills, softens, carries, loosens, cleans, drowns, ruins, rescues, and frustratingly, grows mould on things you meant to eat later. The wall-river in the pipes has work. The kettle has work. The bathwater has far too much work and makes a noise about all of it. Even the dog bowls, which are disgusting, have a clear arrangement with the world.

Face-water did not appear to do anything.

It did not make the woman cleaner. It did not cool her. It did not fill a cup or wash a wound. It did not soften bread. It came, and she wiped it away. It came again, and she wiped it away again. This seemed inefficient even for a large one.

At first, Rue believed it was a warning sign, like foam on slug trails or the smell that comes before something dies behind a stone. I mend cuffs, sacks, cradle-linings, ladder-straps, beetle harnesses, and the small domestic failures people leave in baskets with a look that suggests thread has chosen to betray them personally. To mend properly, you must notice the place where strain has gathered before the tear announces itself.

That is what I saw in the woman.

Not a leak. Not a warning. Strain.

She did not cry all the time, which made it worse in a way. If she had, we could have classified her as one of the wet large ones and adjusted the routes accordingly. But she did other things. She fed the dogs. She laughed once with her mouth full and put her hand over it too late. She carried washing through the garden with a basket against her hip. She clipped dead heads from the lavender and apologised to the plant, which I respected. She spoke to the large man in the low voice large ones use when they are trying not to wake anyone, though they are terrible at judging their own size.

Then, in the first quiet hour, she sat by the glass and let water leave her face.

There was no obvious injury. No blood. No broken finger. No thorn. No snapped wing, which is what I thought the first time I saw a blackbird flapping wrong by the wall and learned that bodies can keep moving after the world has already made its decision. The woman’s body appeared intact. Her cup was full. Her chair was steady. The dogs were not yet loose.

This annoyed Bracken because he could not find the practical part.

“What is the emergency?” he asked.

“Perhaps there isn’t one,” Moth said.

“Then why is she doing it?”

Moth was winding dog hair into a ball, which is a task that makes even kind people dangerous to interrupt. She did not look up. “Perhaps it is what happens after the emergency.”

No one spoke for a moment after that, not because Moth had been wise, which would have been unbearable, but because the phrase had a shape we all recognised. After is often harder to organise than during. During, everyone knows where the buckets are. After, someone has to decide what can still be used.

Rue said this was sentimental and went to count the lentils.

That became our first proper theory: face-water was something that happened after. After what, we did not know. Large ones have too many kinds of before and after. They make ceremonies for some and keep others in drawers. They talk around certain names as if names have teeth. They stare at machines that show them people who are not in the room. They receive folded papers through the door-fold and change colour before opening them. There are so many possible afters in a house that one could go mad trying to sort them.

<picture></picture>

So we did not sort them.

We made rules instead, because rules are what people make when understanding is taking too long.

The first rule of face-water was Rue’s: do not stand directly below it. Not where the woman could hear us, obviously, but not even among ourselves. Still, Moth insisted it be recorded. She said some rules are not for what people have done but for what they may be tempted to become.

I hated this too, for the usual reason.

My rule came last. I said that if the woman made face-water, and there was no practical danger, and no one had urgent work under the sill, then we should leave a clear path near the rosemary. Not for her. She could not use it. For us.

“For what purpose?” Rue asked.

“So we can come and go without everyone trampling the thyme.”

“That is not a purpose. Moth said it was not a shrine because there would be no offerings. Everyone looked at the lavender buds on the sill, which made this a poor defence.

The lavender had complicated things.

<picture></picture>

Before the lavender, the woman was a habit near the glass. After the lavender, she was a habit who had noticed something. Not us. Not properly. But the buds. The returned paper. The small arrangement of the world just outside her reach.

This mattered, though I was careful not to say so in front of Bracken.

The next time she cried, we did not gather as a crowd. That would have been vulgar. Rue pretended to inspect the mint roots. Bracken pretended to repair the hinge on a seed-case he had broken himself. Moth sat beside me under the rosemary and sewed nothing at all.

The woman’s cup steamed for a while, then stopped. She wrote badly that morning. Even I could tell, and I cannot read large. The ink-bone scratched, paused, scratched again. Her shoulders were up near her ears. Her hand moved as if each mark had to be pulled from somewhere awkward.

After a bit, the water came.

She wiped it with her sleeve. We all disapproved of this privately, as sleeves have duties already.

Moth reached into her bag and took out a single sugar grain wrapped in a twist of blue paper.

“No,” I said.

“I haven’t done anything.”

“You are doing it now.”

This pleased her far too much.

She did not put the sugar on the sill. Even Moth knew that would be excessive. Instead, she set it beneath the rosemary, in the dry notch where foragers leave disputed items until judgement can be delayed long enough to become unnecessary.

“For later,” she said.

“For whom?”

Moth tied the blue paper closed again. “For whoever needs to remember there is sweetness somewhere.”

Bracken made a noise behind us that suggested he had stepped on his own opinion and found it painful.

The woman did not see the sugar. Of course she did not. She did not see Rue pretending not to care, or Bracken watching the outside tap with professional suspicion, or Moth sitting with her empty needle, or me wondering when a clear path becomes a custom.

She only sat at the window with her face wet and her cup cold and her strange work in front of her.

Then she reached towards the sill.

The lavender buds were still there. Faded now. Smaller than they had been. She touched them with one finger and moved them slightly away from the edge.

Not much. Just enough that they would not fall.

This produced a silence among us that no one wanted to name.

Rue cleared her throat and said, “Well. At least she has some sense.”

Bracken said, “Or she is keeping dried plants now, which is how infestations start.”

Moth smiled into her sewing.

I said nothing. There was work to do, and it is best not to speak too soon around a thing that might be becoming real.

By the second cup, the sugar was still beneath the rosemary.

By the time the dogs came out, it was gone.

<picture></picture>

Subscribe now

The Rules of Borrowing

A second note from In the Garden

Michelle Blaine

This is an original voiceover. We are not saints, and anyone who says otherwise has never watched Rue carry half a shortbread crumb under her shawl while pretending to have found it growing naturally beneath the bench.

We take what we need. Everyone does. The blackbird takes worms. The caterpillar takes lettuce. The dogs take up more space than is reasonable for creatures with no appointed work. Taking is not the trouble. Carelessness is the trouble.

The first rule is simple: nothing from the hand. If a large one is holding it, wearing it, stirring it, reading it, drinking from it, sleeping under it, or looking at it with any expression more focused than boredom, it is not available. This rule has prevented many deaths and one regrettable incident involving a wedding ring, a drain, and a cousin of Bracken’s who now lives alone under the broken trough and is not invited to autumn supper.

The second rule is that fallen is not always free. A thing must be properly fallen. A crumb under the table is fallen. A thread loose from a towel is fallen. A seed blown from its packet is fallen, though only if you can move it without involving three families and a pulley. A button on the floor is not fallen until the large ones have stepped over it twice. Once may be oversight. Twice is neglect.

The third rule is no keys. This is carved into the inside of the wall near the old mint roots, though no one remembers who carved it or which key made carving necessary. Keys belong to doors, and doors belong to decisions. We have enough trouble without being involved in either.

The fourth rule is no medicines. Moth says this is obvious. Bracken says obvious rules are often written because someone died explaining them too late. Rue says medicines carry bargains inside them. I say that anything kept in a small brown bottle with a white lid and a label full of threats is best left where it is.

The fifth rule is mine: paper may be taken only from the edges.

Paper is useful. It lines cradles, seals draughts, wraps dry stores, stiffens collars, patches roof-leaks, and makes excellent screens if rubbed first with rosemary oil. Paper from the large ones has a particular strength. Thin enough to bend, stubborn enough to last. Better than leaf. Cleaner than mushroom skin. Less opinionated than bark.

<picture></picture>

Paper is also where they keep themselves, though we learned that slowly. I found it after the dogs had been released and returned inside with mud on their feet and no remorse whatsoever. It was a good piece, clean and pale, the exact size for lining the mending box. I had already folded it twice before I saw the marks.

I cannot read large. Most of us cannot. Bracken claims he can read the word “SALE” because it appears often in the papers that come through the door-fold and makes the woman sigh. Rue recognises “URGENT” but believes it is a curse. Moth once spent an afternoon trying to interpret the back of a biscuit packet and emerged with the view that large ones require a great deal of instruction to eat.

The marks on the woman’s paper were narrow and dark. They leaned into one another. They looked like tracks left by something crossing soft ground too quickly.

It was not properly fallen. It was not empty. It had come from her hand, even if her hand was no longer on it, and the first rule is not improved by arguing. I took it under the rosemary anyway and held it flat across my knees.

Moth came by with a length of dog hair looped over one arm and stopped at once.

“You’ve taken writing,” she said.

“I’ve taken paper.”

“That is not paper.”

“It looks very like paper.”

“It has her on it.”

This was ridiculous, but not completely. The corner held only six words, as far as I could tell. Six large marks, perhaps seven, depending on whether one of them had broken in the tearing. I traced the smallest line with my finger and felt nothing. No spell. No heat. No sting. No sudden knowledge. Just ink on paper.

“She will not miss a corner,” I said.

Moth shifted the dog hair from one arm to the other. “That is not the same as it being ours.”

You see the problem with Moth. She is often right in a way that makes a morning more difficult.

We argued quietly, because arguing loudly under rosemary is how you startle bees and end up explaining yourself to people who already dislike you. I said paper was paper. Moth said writing was not. I said the woman had dropped it. Moth said she had lost it. I said there was no difference. Moth looked at me for a long time.

“There is always a difference when you are the one missing something,” she said.

I hated that.

<picture></picture>

By then Bracken had arrived, drawn by the scent of disagreement. She said written things were containers and no one sensible opened a container without knowing whether it held soup, beetles, or a grievance. This delayed matters considerably, because Rue has never said anything once if saying it four times is available.

In the end, we carried the paper back. This took longer than taking it had, which is often the case. Theft is quick. Repair involves everyone having an opinion.

We waited until the large ones had moved away from the room, until the dogs were elsewhere making their views known to the postman, until the woman’s cup had gone cold beside the little sun. Then Moth and I climbed the rosemary, crossed the narrow brick, and pushed the torn corner back through the gap beneath the window frame.

It did not go far. Only just inside. Enough to be found if someone looked down and was the sort of person who noticed what had been returned.

The next morning, the woman came as usual. She sat. She drank from the hand-well. She made marks. Then she reached for something beside the little sun and stopped.

Her fingers touched the torn corner.

She looked at it for a while. Longer than a person looks at rubbish. Shorter than a person looks at a wound. Then she set it on the table beside the lavender buds, which she had not thrown away.

Moth pressed her hand over her mouth.

Bracken whispered, “Now we are in trouble.”

I asked why.

“Because,” he said, “she is keeping things.”

He meant this as a warning, and perhaps it was one. Large ones are fond of keeping things. They keep papers in boxes, names in folders, photographs in machines, complaints in drawers, and words in their throats long after the room has gone quiet. They say they are putting things somewhere safe, but often what they mean is that they are not finished needing them.

We have our own ways of keeping.

A thread returned untangled. A cup turned over before the roof-drip starts. Three lavender buds still on a sill by noon. Yours, meaning the large ones. Yours, meaning the kettle-boiling, door-slamming, dog-owning creatures who live in the house and believe the garden belongs to them because someone once signed a paper. We have never seen this paper.

We have, however, seen the woman in the window.

She is always the first of the large ones.

By the time she comes to the cold square of glass, the garden is already lit enough for mistakes. The blackbirds are busy. The gulls have opinions. The bees are not yet committed, but they are thinking about it. Sensible creatures are still tucked into wall-cracks then, or curled beneath the sage roots, or pretending not to hear the robins. Robins are beautiful only to people who have never been regarded by one at close range.

The woman sits beside her little sun and makes marks on thin bark.

This is what we believed at first: that she was keeping accounts. Large ones are always keeping accounts. Seeds, spoons, sugar, years. They count things until even the counting looks tired.

Later, Bracken said no, it was spell-work.

Bracken says this about most things he does not understand, including the printer, the microwave, and once, unfortunately, a bathmat drying in the sun. Moth said it was nesting behaviour. Rue said it was illness.

I said nothing, because I had been watching longer than the others and had learned that the woman did not always make marks. Sometimes she placed her hands flat on the table and lowered her head as if listening to the wood.

Sometimes water came from her eyes.

This caused trouble.

We know rain, obviously. We know mist. We know the cold wet that gathers under leaves and drops without warning down the back of your neck while you are trying to haul a biscuit crumb uphill. We know the wall-river in the pipes and the roof-drip after the large ones bathe. But face-water is another matter.

The first morning Rue saw it, she crossed herself in the old way and refused to pass beneath the window for three days.

“Salt,” she said. “Bad sign.”

“Everything from them is salt,” Bracken said. “Sweat, soup, crisps, the sea-talk they keep in shells.”

“They don’t keep sea-talk in shells,” I said.

“You don’t know that.”

Moth, who is kinder than is useful, said, “Perhaps she is leaking.”

No one liked that.

We are not cruel people. Not usually. We steal, yes, but theft is a large word for what happens when a crumb has already been dropped and no one is showing proper interest. We take thread, hair, paper corners, the silver skins of garlic, fallen petals, the blue fluff from the large man’s jumper, and once, during a summer of poor judgement, an entire button. The button is now a table.

What we do not take is pain. Pain is difficult to store. It goes bad quickly. It makes people stand around saying serious things while the soup catches.

<picture></picture>

So for a while we left the woman alone. This was not difficult. She lived behind glass. We lived beneath stone. Between us were height, custom, dogs, and the accepted fact that large ones do not notice anything smaller than a missing key.

Still, she returned most mornings.

She came before the dogs, before the kettle began its bubbling work, before the large man padded through in his house shoes and said whatever he says when his voice is still low from sleep. Sometimes she turned towards him. Sometimes she did not.

After a while, her lamp became useful. The foragers crossed the patio while it held steady and before the dogs were released. The menders dried paper scraps beneath the sill because the heat from the wall came on after her second cup. The young ones were warned not to stare up if she leaned close to the glass. Not because she would see them. She would not. But because staring is how a person forgets what they were meant to be doing.

<picture></picture>

Then came the morning of the lavender buds.

It was early summer. The sort of morning that makes large ones say beautiful and small ones check for slugs.

The woman had been worse that week. Even Bracken noticed, and Bracken once failed to notice he had married into a family of voles.

“She is making the salt again,” he said.

“She is crying,” said Moth.

“That is what I said.”

“No,” said Moth. “It isn’t.”

I was carrying a scrap of blue thread at the time. Good thread. Strong. Taken from the laundry basket after a towel had shed it, and therefore entirely legal. I had intended it for cuff-work, but as I passed beneath the window I saw the woman’s hand on the table, palm open beside the cup.

Her fingers were still.

I put down the thread.

Then, because the morning had already gone wrong, I climbed the rosemary, crossed the narrow brick, and chose three lavender buds from the dry side where the bees had not yet started work. Moth saw me and whispered my name in the tone people use when they want you to stop but also want to know what happens.

“I haven’t done anything,” I said.

“You’re doing it now.”

“She won’t know.”

Moth did not answer, which was worse.

<picture></picture>

I placed the lavender buds on the outside sill in a line, close enough to the glass that she might see them if she looked down, far enough from the edge that they would not immediately fall and make a fool of me.
